The Hollander Beater — a brief history

Invented in the Netherlands around the 1680s, the Hollander beater was, originally designed to process rags into pulp for papermaking. Before its invention, paper was made using stamp mills — large wooden hammers that pounded fibres for days. The Hollander beater could do the same job in a fraction of the time, and with finer control over fibre length and quality.

The design is elegantly simple: an oval trough filled with water and fibre, with a rotating drum fitted with metal bars. As the drum spins, fibres pass between the drum bars and a fixed bedplate, where they are split lengthwise — not cut — into thinner and thinner strands. The pulp circulates continuously around the trough, passing through the drum hundreds of times.

By the 18th century, the Hollander beater had spread across Europe, fundamentally transforming papermaking from a slow, labour-intensive craft into a more efficient process. Today, industrial paper production uses refiners and continuous pulping systems, but small-scale Hollander beaters remain the tool of choice for studio papermakers worldwide — valued for the control they give over fibre character and sheet quality.
